To: Members and selected others
The Leapfrog Group just released new Hospital Safety
Scores for Iowa hospitals and others across the U.S.. Of the
thirty (30) Iowa hospitals included, ten (10) received an
"A" grade, the highest score. They are: Finley Hospital of
Dubuque, Genesis Medical Center-Davenport, Grinnell Regional
Medical Center, Mary Greeley Medical Center-Ames, Mercy
Medical Center of Cedar Rapids, Mercy Medical Center of
Clinton, Mercy Medical Center of Dubuque, Mercy Medical
Center of Mason City, Skiff Medical Center-Newton and
Spencer Hospital. See attached listing of all the Iowa
hospitals with their scores.
These grades were
assigned to U.S. general hospitals based on their
infections, injuries and errors. They are designed to give
the public information they can use, in an effort to prevent
more than 400,000 deaths estimated to occur in the United
States every year due to hospital errors.
The
Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the
nation's leading experts on patient safety. Twenty-eight
(28) measures of publically available hospital safety data
are used to produce a single score that represents a
hospital's overall performance in patient safety.
As
patients begin to take a more active role in selecting where
they receive health care, it has never been more important
to focus on hospital safety and transparency.
