HPCI News: Meaningful Use of Health Information Technology -
Moving the program in the right direction

Twenty-six organizations (63), including the HPCI and IHBA, recently signed-on to a letter supporting a national commitment to effective management of health information through the use of electronic health records (EHRs) to improve health outcomes. The letter was recently sent to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). Tax payers (through CMS) are making a $34 billion in financial incentives to physicians and hospitals for electronic health records (EHRs) and $44 billion in total. In return, these providers agree to use the EHRs in meaningful ways…thus the term "meaningful use". See the attached letter and information below.

Also, in a related action, during the 2012 session the Iowa General Assembly created Iowa's Health Information Exchange. In Iowa it will be called the Iowa Health Information Network (IHIN).
